do you start with the construction process of Barns. Ultimately
the most important requirement is Materials. There
is a plethora of Builders Merchant out there, such as Jewsons,
Travis Perkins, Ridgeons, Build Center however I have found
the most competitive with regards to delivery and price is
Unique Building Supplies. I discovered them in their infancy
and immediately knew they were going to be great achievers.
Yes they supply all the materials you can think off from
new to reclaimed (particularly important in the Barn Converting
process), but they can get it to your site if not the next
day but generally within 48 hours. The reason it works for
them is their ‘purchasing power’ throughout all
suppliers not just in East Anglia but nationally too. It
also does not matter where you live as I have had materials
delivered to my parents in Dorset. Try them and test them,
I bet they’re cheaper. |

have used 2 companies very local to me, both provide excellent
service and also after-sales service. If I need oak framed
windows and doors I will always turn to Weybread Woodcraft.
Phil has invested a lot of money in producing a system
for doors and windows that meet current building regulations
with regard to air permeability, water tightness and wind
resistance. For staircase construction they have again
invested for the future in a fantastic Cad software package,
which enables them to achieve bespoke stair designs, which
is usually the case in barn conversions. |

Gorrard is tucked away just off the A140 near
Diss and prides himself on simply selling the best oak
(mostly French) at a very competitive rate per Cube. Any
sizes, widths and particularly lengths you want he will
have it ready usually within 10 days. I have seen some
oak that he has for flooring and used for making oak doors,
which is absolutely spotless of knots etc. Only the best
will do and I have been warned of his home made cider,
however I have not experienced this.
Another very good supplier of oak and other hardwoods is Ben
Sutton of Sutton Timber. I have used them for structural
oak, but mainly for flooring of which he does two grades,
rustic and character. He has a very good machinist who is
local to him, who also prepares all oak for staircases, spindles
and also for skirting and architraves. |
